Flaming June

Ref: ART FFL

Frederic, Lord Leighton 1830 - 1896 English
Flaming June 1895

Back of card reads:
Lord Leighton was one of the dominant figures of Victorian art and the first (and so far only) British artist to be awarded a peerage. His output was large and varied, including landscapes, portraits, and book illustrations, but he is best known for scenes from the world of classical Greece and Rome, of which this is perhaps the most famous. It shows the magnificent draughtsmanship for which he was renowned and - in the unforgettable orange robe - a wonderful feeling for opulent colour.

Woman with a Cat

Ref: ART PB

Pierre Bonnard 1867 - 1947 French
Woman with a Cat - 1912

Back of card reads:
This painting forms part of the collection held at the Musée d'Orsay, Paris.
Bonnard excelled in quiet domestic interiors (reflecting his own contented family life). However, his colours and brushwork are often lusciously rich, so there is pictorial splendour in his work in spite of the low-key subject matter. In this painting the cat is the most animated feature - its paw upraised, its head alert. The woman, who looks down rather than out at the spectator, is more characteristically subdued. Her slight lean towards the table and her steadying hand suggest she is waiting for something to happen.

Vase of Flowers

Ref: ART OR

Odilon Redon 1840 - 1916 French
Vase of Flowers c.1912 - 14

Back of card reads:
Redon was one of the leading figures of Symbolism, a movement in late 19th- and early 20th-century art that looked beyond the material world of the Impressionists to explore mysterious, enigmatic, even weird themes. For most of his life he worked almost exclusively in black-and-white - in drawings and prints - but in his fifties he suddenly discovered a love of colour, which he displayed particularly in mythological and visionary subjects and in hauntingly beautiful flower paintings such as this.

Sunflowers

Ref: ART VvG S

Vincent van Gogh 1853 - 1890 Dutch
Sunflowers 1888

Back of card reads:
This is one of a series of pictures of sunflowers that van Gogh painted in August and September 1888. At the time he was living in a rented house at Aries in southern France; there he was briefly joined by his friend Paul Gauguin. before they had a disastrous quarrel, after which van Gogh famously cut off part of his own ear. It is typical of his emotional swings that he could paint such a joyous picture as this when he was so near to a breakdown.

Luncheon

Ref: ART PAR

Pierre Auguste Renoir 1841 -1919 French
Luncheon of the Boating Party 1880 - 81

Back of card reads:
This joyous painting perfectly captures the atmosphere of a lazy summer afternoon. It depicts a group of Renoir's friends having a leisurely lunch at a favourite restaurant overlooking the River Seine on the outskirts of Paris (boats can be glimpsed in the background). The girl on the left holding a dog is Aline Charigot, who became Renoir's wife in 1882, and the man in the straw hat on the right is Gustave Caillebotte, a fellow Impressionist painter.

Mr and Mrs Andrews

Ref: ART TG

Thomas Gainsborough 1727 - 1788 English
Mr and Mrs Andrews c.1749

Back of card reads:
The young couple in this painting - Robert Andrews and Frances Carter - were married in November 1748 in All Saints Church, Sudbury, Gainsborough's home town in Suffolk. The tower of the church can be glimpsed through the trees in the centre background. Gainsborough must have painted the picture soon after the wedding. He was in his early twenties at the time (about the same age as the groom), and the painting has a sense of youthful freshness and optimism that has helped make it one of his most popular works.

Nude Youth Sitting

Ref: ART HF

Hippolyte Flandrin 1809 - 1864 French
Nude Youth Sitting by the Sea: Study of a figure 1836

Back of card reads:
Flandrin was a favourite pupil of Ingres, training under him in Paris and later in Rome (Ingres was Director of the French Academy there, and Flandrin was one of its prize-winning students). He became best known for murals in churches, but he also produced easel paintings of various kinds, including portraits and mythological scenes. This arresting nude study, with the back gracefully curved into an arc of a circle, shows how much he learnt from his illustrious master.

Valpincon Bather

Ref: ART JADI

Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres 1780 - 1867 French
The Valpinçon Bather (Baigneuse de Valpin con) 1808

Back of card reads:
This famous nude is named after a family that owned it in the 19th century. It was painted when Ingres was a prizewinning student at the French Academy in Rome and marks the beginning of his fascination with the theme of bathing women. Ingres was so pleased with this extraordinarily graceful back view that he returned to the pose several times in his career, notably in The Turkish Bath (1863, Louvre, Paris), one of his final masterpieces.

Reclining Nude

Ref: ART AM

Amedeo Modigliani 1884 - 1920 Italian
Reclining Nude from the Back (Nu Couche de dos) 1917

Back of card reads:
Modigliani did not start painting the female nude seriously until 1916, so almost all his pictures of this type date from the last three or four years of his short life, Whereas his portraits usually depict friends, his nudes were painted from professional models or casual acquaintances such as waitresses. Whether reclining or seated, the nudes are shown in close up, with arms and/or legs cropped, helping to produce a feeling of great intimacy. They are powerfully erotic, but also notable for grandeur of form and resonant beauty of colour.

Waterlillies

Ref: ART CM

Claude Monet 1840 - 1926 French
Waterlilies 1907

Back of card reads:
A round canvas such as this is a rarity in Monet's oeuvre; there is also a companion-piece in the Musee de Vernon, which the painter presented to the town in May 1925, an unusual gesture of generosity on his part. The Saint-Etienne 'tondo' was bought direct from the artist in 1924, for the sum of 30,000 francs. Monet was a passionate gardener. In 1893, by now a respected and financially successful artist, he began creating an exotic water garden at his home at Giverny, and in his final years the waterlilies there became his favourite - almost exclusive - subject.

Creation Adam

Ref: ART M

Michelangelo 1475 - 1564 Italian
The Creation of Adam c.1508

Back of card reads:
Michelangelo always regarded himself as primarily a sculptor and he undertook painting commissions reluctantly, but his frescoes on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel are probably the most famous and revered works of his titanic career The main scenes depict events from the Book of Genesis, and this is the most celebrated of them, showing God igniting life into the languid form of Adam - one of the most sublime nude figures in the history of art.

Birth Venus

Ref: ART SB

Sandro Botticelli c.1445 - 1510 Italian
Birth of Venus (Nascita di Venere) 1484

Back of card reads:
This celebrated masterpiece is so extraordinarily graceful and beautiful that it is almost shocking to recall the details of the mythological story on which it is based. The ancient Greek poet Hesiod tells how the god Uranus (the first ruler of the universe) was overthrown by his son Cronus, who castrated him and cast the severed parts into the sea; from the foam, Venus the goddess of love - was born and floated ashore on a scallop shell, wafted by gentle winds.

The Hay Wain

Ref: ART JC

John Constable 1776 - 1837 English
The Hay Wain 1821

Back of card reads:
Constable's most famous painting depicts a scene in Suffolk, near Flatford Mill on the River Stour. The title comes from the horse-drawn cart in the water ('wain' is an old word for wagon). The cottage on the left was rented by a farmer named Willy Lott. Today, it and the river path are still much as they were in Constable's day. Although he is now virtually a national hero, during his lifetime Constable was more highly esteemed in France than in England. This picture won a gold medal at the Paris Salon in 1824.

Bar Folies Bergere

Ref: ART EM

Édouard Manet 1832 - 1883 French
A Bar at the Folies-Bergére 1882

Back of card reads:
This was Manet's last great masterpiece, painted the year before his death. It is set in a famous Parisian nightclub and the central figure - who gazes out with a rather weary expression - was modelled by a barmaid called Suzon. Behind her is a mirror, in which her back and the face of a customer are reflected. Although Manet was weakened by illness when he painted the picture, it is unsurpassed in his work for sheer beauty of brushwork, particularly in the still-life details.

Fighting Temeraire

Ref: ART JMW

JMW Turner 1775 - 1851 English
The Fighting 'Temeraire' 1839

Back of card reads:
The Temeraire played a heroic role at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805, sailing into action next in line after Nelsons flagship the Victory. Thirty-three years later Turner happened to catch sight of it being towed on its last journey to the breaker's yard. He immediately recognized the pictorial potential of the spectacle, and the following year this painting was a great success at the Royal Academy. It has been seen as a patriotic elegy for a great age of British seapower, and the blood-red sunset recalls the carnage of battle.

Troupe

Ref: ART HdTL

Henri de Toulouse Lautrec 1864 - 1901 French
The Troupe of Mademoiselle Eglantine 1896

Back of card reads:
Almost all Toulouse-Lautrec's work deals with bohemian life in the seedily glamorous Parisian district of Montmartre, where he had his studio. His early death was brought on by excessive indulgence in the kind of pleasures he so often depicted. Nevertheless, he was a dedicated professional artist who produced a large body of work, including some of the most brilliant posters ever created. This one was commissioned by Jane Avril for a tour she made to London with three other dancers.

Dog on Leash

Ref: ART GB

Giacomo Balla 1871 - 1958 Italian
Dynamism of a Dog on a Leash 1912

Back of card reads:
As the title of the painting suggests, Balla is concerned with movement and speed. By multiplying the images of tail, legs, ears, leash and shoes, he creates a vigorous sense of a small dog out for a fast-paced walk with its mistress. Balla was one of the leading figures of Futurism - an Italian art movement founded in 1909 that exulted in the energy of the modern world, The Futurists were entranced by the power of machinery, but Balla also enjoyed witty observations of contemporary life such as this.
